Grade 5 Theory Terms and Signs
Do you really need to learn them all?
If you're preparing for your Grade 5 Music Theory exam, you might be wondering if it's really necessary to learn all the terms and signs. The short answer is yes, and here's why.
How many terms & signs are there?
For your ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam, there are a total of 134 terms and signs you need to know. This might seem daunting at first, but with the right approach, it is totally manageable. Chances are, you will already know many of these terms and signs anyway (e.g. forte). These terms cover a range of instructions, from dynamics and articulations to tempos and expressions, essential for interpreting music accurately.

Why Is It So Important to Learn These Terms?
1. Marks you can (almost) guarantee in your exam
If you're taking your music theory exam, you likely want to pass on your first try, maybe even with distinction, or perhaps you need to pass urgently to move on to Grade 6 practical. Whatever your goal, by learning all 134 terms and signs, you have a good chance of securing the 3-4 marks typically allocated to these questions. Knowing your terms means you can almost guarantee those marks, whereas not knowing them risks losing easy points.
2. Exam confidence
Taking exams is always nerve-wracking, but it's even worse when you're unprepared! Knowing your terms and signs (along with all the other content covered in my Get Grade 5 Theory Course) ensures you've done everything possible to prepare. This preparation allows you to start your exam with confidence.
3. Enhancing Your Performance Skills
Understanding musical terms and signs isn't just about passing an exam—it's essential for your development as a performer. These terms reveal how pieces should be played, conveying the intended emotion and character. Whether you're preparing for an exam, aiming for higher marks in sight reading, or studying for GCSE/A-level Music, knowing these terms helps you perform with precision and expression, making your performances more compelling and enhancing your ability to interpret written music and a composer's intentions.
Where I can find a full list?
A full list of the terms and signs (and their translations) can be found in the Get Grade 5 Theory Course. I recommend printing out the Terms and Signs document and memorising each term via flashcards. When you think you've memorised them, try out the terms & signs quiz in module 14!
