Whilst these are an incredibly useful tool, sometimes it can be difficult to find practice papers (and the answers), to know if the free PDF you've found online is accurate in terms of content, and to know best practices when using them.
Practice tests are a key part of your exam preparation strategy. Here’s three reasons why they're so beneficial:
I always tell my course members that there are two parts to exam revision:
STEP 1: Learn the content. Yes, all of it! Ideally, follow the syllabus to structure your learning, or enrol in course that covers all the required information
to ensure you're fully prepared!
STEP 2: Learn the exam structure. Once you've covered the material, it’s crucial to learn how to apply it in an exam setting, and how each topic is tested
It's easy to feel confident during revision, only to realise in the exam that you didn’t know something as well as you thought. Practice papers help uncover knowledge gaps, allowing you to revisit and review those areas ahead of your exam.
The ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam is two-hours long (please note that you can apply for extra time - more info here.). This might seem long, but it passes quickly! Practice tests are invaluable for refining your exam timing, ensuring you have enough time to work through every question, and sufficient time to check.

While practice tests are a fantastic tool, to get the most benefits you need to be used correctly. Here's a few tips to ensure you're getting the most out of them:
Time management is crucial in your exam! A common mistake is using practice papers without a timer. Whenever possible, set a stopwatch to match the exam's time limit (2 hours for ABRSM Grade 5 Theory). This helps you develop and refine your pacing to avoid running out of time on the day.
Open book tests definitely have value, but if you're in your final stages of exam revision try and avoid the temptation to look back at notes during practice papers. After all, you won't have this luxury in the exam itself! Relying on your notes means you miss out on the opportunity to test your true understanding of the material and how you might respond in an exam. At the end of your practice test, absolutely go back to you notes to see what you were missing.
Although it's tempting to move straight onto the next practice paper, try and review your answers carefully, especially the ones you got wrong. Understanding your mistakes is one of the best ways to improve, and will help you to avoid making the same mistake again.
Practice papers aren't just for testing your knowledge of the material on the syllabus, they're also a tool for refining your exam technique. Use them to figure out which sections take the longest, roughly how long it will take you to complete all questions, and how much time you need to check your answers. Knowing your timings and where you should be at set points during the exam, will help you feel confident on exam day.
Perhaps the ultimate question - how can you be sure that you're ready to sit your Music Theory Exam? My advice is to ask yourself the following questions, and if you can answer yes to all of them, then you're ready!
- Have you looked at the ABRSM Grade 5 theory syllabus?
- Are you confident on all topics listed on the syllabus? Be honest!
- Are you consistently passing practice papers?
- Have you passed a mock exam?
- Do you have your exam plan finalised, including timings?
It may seem obvious, but are you confident in all areas of the syllabus? If not, be sure to download

If you're consistently scoring well on practice tests (60+ out of 75), then this is a great indicator that you're ready. Ensure you're completing the papers under timed conditions to reflect the real exam environment.
Treat one or two practice papers like the real thing. Time yourself, avoid using notes, and treat the test like it's exam day. If you can complete it confidently without running out of time or needing extra help, you're likely ready for the real thing.
Grade 5 Music Theory is an important step for many musicians, and practice papers are one of the most effective ways to prepare for the exam.
